A Trip to the Aquarium! @ Friday, February 21, 2020

February 2020

Absolutely delighted to be visiting the aquarium for an event tonight , as last time we didn't even have flip phones, just plastic wind up Kodak disposable cameras. An amazing evening, intimate at 50, checking out the new jelly fish exhibition that opened last December.

So quiet, calm, unless you're the first one in or work here we doubt it's like this, though there would have been a steep decline with no busloads of Chinese tourists, no kids either. 18+ our kinda event with a glass in hand, camera in the other and canape in my bag (they were hot) it was a wonderful evening learning about jellyfish from a panel of experts, with plenty of time to explore.

At some point everyone vanished and we were the last to leave. It was so lovely and makes up for that time we missed an event as we had a test in class (night class). I'd love to plan a wedding here, maybe our second? :P

When was the last time you took a trip Under the Sea?

Cheese Toasties @ Vic Market // Ripe Cheese @ Thursday, February 20, 2020

February

I consider being able to consume a cheese toastie the very peek of health, and lately we've been lucky to be there, even if we're an exhausted pigeon. And so no trams on a cooler day wasn't going to stop us from strolling up to the market on an extended lunch break to check out Ripe Cheese at Vic Market. Super easy to find btw. All the cheese!

One day I want to buy all the things for a picnic here and then still have the energy to picnic after a trip to the market. Market trolley and cooler bag essential, also winter so no one gets food poisoning.

The offering is singular and changes often (hello fig and blue cheese next week), made fresh on the day in the early hours when the market first opens at 6am by the very friendly Hakim himself in what appears to be a one man operation.

Toastie of the Week $12

This week it's "oozy gooey mozzarella with bitey vintage cheddar, a smear of blue and caramelized champagne leeks on buttered sourdough. Served with cornichons on the side" it was absolutely delicious! Serves 2, this is bigger irl than in the photo btw. .

Lighting we have extremes, there is no sun and shade... only stark daylight or indoors.

Highly recommended pop this on your must try before 3pm list!

Lemon, Butter & Sugar $7.50
The perfect afternoon snack. Consistently perfect.

There's a couple few of these crepe vans around, including one in a suburban mall by the movies at Forest Hill! It's the place for dessert, though sadly if you're catching a late night movie they're not around afterwards.

Offering pre-made waffles and crepes, made in front of you the later was the obvious choice. This is my seconf visit as my first ended up on the floor after lining up for 20mins, if that isn't heartbreak idk what is, so close but so far (watch out for flipping tables, I popped it on the table, stood up standing on the table leg and it flipped!!).

There's a filling for everyone, suggestions and custom ones. Unlike the City Hall location they're served in a box with cutlery instead of the hard to eat and most definitely will run down your arm paper sleeves.

Saturday 15th February

Recently we won an ice cream competition so headed up a stop or two past 'The Moldy Fig' (great New Orleans food), north side about 20mins from the city.

A Malaysian gelato place that we wished was closer to the city, they had a couple classic but mostly unique small batch flavours including durian, teh Tarik, black glutinous rice? Pistachio, Turkish delight and milo!!

We also got a glimpse of their past menus which included pandan coconut, cendol and pumpkin!

I had the teh tarik and durian (right), she had the Turkish delight and glutinous rice (left).

They've been around for almost two years, and there's more seats in the back.
Service was very friendly.

Think Pipelot but smaller with an awesome rotating menu (we do love Pipelot too, around the corner from the office), while there is vanilla and oddly vegan chocolate you won't find cotton candy, cookies and cream, or any Ben & Jerry-esque flavours.

We'll definitely be back when in town!

Do you have any local gems for when it comes to ice cream?

Casual Eats @ Iroli (Malvern) @ Monday, February 17, 2020

February

Bento B $13-ish

Lunch at basic takeaway place, the beef was very good, deep fried just fine but the bento was disappointingly fusion with tomato and a strange salad instead of seaweed and classic salad w kewpie sesame mayo.

Would recommend the beef as a don. Not the bento.
Service was very friendly. We're not a fan of Japanese fusion.

Tuesday 21st January

From the creators of Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart and PAFU, Kurimu brings another Japanese dessert/snack. About a month or so ago Kurimu silently popped up at the local mall bringing that beautiful choux we've been meaning to try from Melbourne Central to The Glen as well as Hokkaido cheese tarts!

There's quite a few fillings for the choux and croissants though I've yet to spot match and yuzu. I'm also a sucker for taro, meanwhile le beau's after dulce le leche and keen to try pork floss.

The Menu - Cheese tarts, choux, coffee pan, ice pops, croissants

Our picks on our first visit - one of each of thing we haven't tried, well from here that is.

So what is a Kurimu? It's a long éclair, filled with a crème custard filling and covered in a nutty crème patisserie topping. Website says "choux pastry filled with creamy custard and topped with crunchy almonds. Comes in three flavours: Original Cream Custard, Strawberry & Chocolate". Baked fresh on site daily and filled to order.

Original Choux $4 - So good w crispy bits on top it's quite different from say an eclair. More dense but still light, and smaller diameter but longer. Would recommend I like it but don't love it, perhaps a try twice thing.

The Inside

Well that's just sad isn't it? The filling. I expected more...

Strawberry Charcoal Croissant $7

Charcoal is just a color said the girl. So big, light and magical! With a bit of strawberry filling, yes it is made with the real stuff but it was also a tad artificial with a strawberry pocky like flavour (I'm a pocky addict). Much bigger than the cru+ strawberry one, but at similar prices I prefer the cru one, which is strawberries and cream.

At first only The Glen had the croissants but now the city is getting them too! They come in:  Original, Charcoal with Custard Cream (also seen with Salted Caramel and other variations), Salted Egg, Mentaiko (Salted Cod Roe) & Pork Floss with Mayo.

Damage $11, no regrets. We'll be back to try other croissants for sure! Choux are a maybe if they do extra special flavours like yuzu.

February

Delighted to see they've released the croissants that were exclusive to The Glen at the Melbourne Central branch. Though it's a small spot than The Glen hence less flavours.

By luck after school they (Glen location) were still open a little after 6pm on a Tuesday.

We discovered the salted egg is sweet, that's so crazy!
We're actually here for a savory one to complete the review, but ended up getting both as they were about to close, hello BOGOF.

Chicken Floss $6
It was beautiful! Light and magical. There was a spread inside, savory, perhaps an eggy base, unfamiliar. The floss was fascinating, not salty as expected but subtle in flavor, savory and perfect.

Salted Egg (Sweet) $6

This was absolutely amazing, it's going on my monthly highlights list!! It was indeed sweet, but there was that perfect balance of sweet and salty. Wow. If you only try one thing from Kurimu, this is the one to try.

The salted egg is definitely my favorite here (of the 3 I've had) and in our top 4, which includes the durian (luxbite), lychee rose raspberry (not sure where that's from), strawberry (cru+, upstairs).

Wow that was amazing!

Service was very friendly as always.

Have you tried their choux? Thoughts? Love that they're filled as you order them.

Tip - Get takeaway and sit at the food court upstairs, or the outdoor one. Don't let the black one influence the flavour you pick, it's just a colour and taste same as a yellow/normal colored one.
