Misty's has been on our list for years, as it is widely known as the place to go to for American food aka hot dog/burger/deep fried heaven, and so we were delighted to finally visit for the 4th July celebration! Though it was the 5th here, due to time zone differences. 




Outside it's dark and cold but the inside couldn't be more of a contrast, with bright colours and lights! The deco can be only what is described as Americana, little treasures and memorabilia from decades gone by, oh how we miss the 50s! With Motown Rock and Roll playing all that was missing was waiters on skates!







We have the best sodas back home, classics and limited edition. Things you wouldn't expect, like Soda Shaq! A blueberry cream soda. There were classics like root beer, Dr Pepper and Fanta Grape (my favourite!). And if you're wondering what Big Red tastes like, it's like those red gummy candy/snacks but as a drink, though it also tastes like bubblegum.



Can you spot the state we're from? My travel goals include visiting quite a few states, though not quite 50. :P Any state that has a museum town, we'll be there! He loves the Wild West.








Deep fried and crunchy, bio guy loved these and he doesn't even like mac and cheese! It was a mild cheese, a Cheddar Colby while I would have preferred something a bit stronger.





These were amazing! Soft melt in your mouth. Charred just right, finger licking good with a glaze sweet bqq though with the great balance in flavour. These are the best ribs I've ever had!  Order a platter to share, or each! I can't wait to get this again! 






Buttermilk crumbed fried chicken, mashed potatoes, white gravy, garlic roll & side of salad
While the chicken wasn't noteworthy the mash was beautiful, the best mash I've had on par with my aunt's. Creamy smooth and decadent. The salad was quite nice as well, pretty good salad as a side with a ranch dressing.  






Bio guy loved these saying they were 'choice wings', the really good ones with lots of meat. Though the buffalo marinade wasn't as strong as expected with a chili sign on the menu. 






This is the ultimate platter with something for every deep fried lover and those ribs we love! This platter has it all! I loved the wedges, they were the fluffiest potato pringle like wedges (pictured above the fries). Perfect to be shared for entree between 5+ or one bio guy *sigh*.

The onion rings mixed herb seasoning was to die for said bio guy, crunchy bites. Expertly crafted flavours. 







Thick-shakes soon followed of which we got to share the Reese's Pieces one, it was very peanut buttery as expected and had Reese's M&Ms mixed it. Indeed it was so thick you could eat it like a dessert and we did!

There are so many exciting flavours for thick-shakes! 14 thick shakes, 9 unique. Including Butterfingers and Pumpkin! Bacon & Waffles appears to be the most experimental.






An absolutely delicious brownie that was more like a chocolate cake served with both cream and ice cream! I do love how our serving sizes are quite generous. Bio guy polished this one off and would have licked the plate, but he understands I am very strict when it comes to behaviour around me. :P





Can you believe I've never had cherry pie before?? I wasn't really a fan of this one though, as the crust was too thick and moist. I prefer my cherries sweeter too, I do love Fathers' cherry tart!



Meanwhile I loved the pumpkin pie! If I could only eat one type of pie for the rest of my life it would be pumpkin. Heavy on the spices it was more than just the usual cinnamon but the whole list of spices I use in my pie! This is a must try. 

Misty offers nine different pies! All the classics and then some candy pies.

Our Thoughts? Overall deep fried and delicious! Must try a couple times. You'd be surprised that Misty's is so much more than just burgers.

Misty herself was bright and bubbly. Very friendly just as any great hostess ought to be, as well as running the diner she also cooks! The recipes are her own. 

The Bad - There was quite a few dirty spoons, streaky and spots on cutler and lipstick on glasses. And this was with them knowing that we were dinning tonight.

The Good - Everything else! Did we mention there are four kinds of fries?! The wedge is my favourite.

Located just off Chapel St x High St, heading towards the city pass Lucky Coq next to a car repairs place and the new high school. Misty's is near a tram No. 6 Glen Iris, and Prahran Station. Though it's a place you gotta look for it, not a place you'd stumble upon. But once you do, you've found a gem!

Tuesday 4th July



Gru Thai has been on our list for a while, as we bought a deal through Groupon. I feel like it could be one of those places that's kept alive through Groupon.

Located on the main street in South Melb it was easy to get to, via a Collins St tram past Crown or the rare no.1 tram we took from Flinders.  



It's cold out there but lovely in here! A warmly lit cozy space, it 90% full, unexpectedly so for a Tuesday said the waitress, explaining why they were understaffed. With one waitress and three chefs on tonight. 

We chose not to sit on the floor, but you can for the complete experience.




I love skewers (not the supermarket ones, they use low quality meat and are awful) and these were pretty good, though Okra still has the best ones. Served with a thick peanut sauce that was good enough to have on its own. But why are skewers always expensive? :(




Katherine had the money bags, which were pretty good and nothing like the supermarket ones, though the prawn still had the shell, which we didn't like. It came with fish sauce. 



Sweet and perfect, I loved it! Considered getting another but considering that entrees arrived and they needed reminders about drinks, nope. One of the best milk teas I've had, the recipe is behind the bar, but I can't read thai. The waitress said the secret is full cream milk and condense milk, but surely its got to be more than that? Bangpop uses a syrup, perhaps it's  Dulce le Leche aka crock pot condense milk that my class talks about.

Drinks arrived after asking for them a couple times and just before mains. 




I ordered the salad, as I had noodles and deep fried chicken for lunch. But boy was that a mistake. I'd ordered the papaya salad after my great experience at Bangpop, but it was completely different here. 

It was waaaaaaaay too hot for me, though only had one chili rating. Katherinelaughed and said standard level of heat, a bit mild for thai. She absolutely loves thai food while I can say I love Bangpop & Tom Yum Restaurant. 




A little spicy, but just right with a good balance of coconut milk. The lamb was a bit fatty and could have been softer. We both enjoyed this dish.  Not sure if I'd get it again though. 




Soft jelly outside, crunchy inside. In a coconut milk  x rosewater. I'd love this as a drink! The water chestnuts were interesting though after a couple we decided they were too foreign :P

Where does fresh coconut milkcome from? Unless you juice that coconut yourself, it comes in a can. 


Savory! Needs more salted c or nutella. It had just caramel and not enough. Banana in desserts tends to be savory in comparison to the sweet stuff, you need to do more with it.

Oh how we regretted not getting the deep fried banana, one of my favourite desserts if you use lady fingers. 







The bill came to $64 + wine though through groupon we paid $20pp for a three course meal and drink. It was good thai but nothing amazing except for the milk tea.

Service was friendly but slooow, unexpectedly busy with three in the kitchen and one waitress, but they did very well.

Will we be back? Yes, as they offer you $20 on your next spend if you give them a review, which I'm doing right now :P

Tuesday 4th July



Can you believe I've never been to a fried chicken restaurant before? (KFC epic fail with .5 rating doesn't count.) I do love fried chicken though it's more of an occasional treat, every couple months. Nene & Gami seem to be the most popular places when it comes to Korean fried chicken, and there are multiple locations for both. With appointments at Eastland we stopped by Gami for a late lunch. Located above Coles and under the movies they weren't located in the food court. 





With plenty of seats and a modern pops of colour it looks like a very popular place to be pre-movie and to hang out, for young people. Alas we aren't that young. It feels like a place that might have a DJ on Friday nights.




The boys love deep fried things and beer, alas bio guy doesn't drink. He loves to be turns into a bogan when he does. - This I have yet to see and eagerly await to see this happen.









The Japache side meant to be mushroom dish but was mostly onion and noodle. That aside it was excellent. It was so good I would get this just on its own for lunch! Though ask for scissors, it's a bit hard to cut with teeth and chopsticks. 

Note - This is only available for lunch. Also we should have taken a photo of the noodles... You could easier get this for one as a lunch dish.






We ordered as half half seasoning, only got original but was still good. Boneless, tender meat consistent and a beautiful crisp seasoning . This is one of the best fried chickens I've ever had! Though I've never been to a fried chicken place before. Bio guy prefers it with bones as he eats the bones too.



Dipping sauces: honey mustard, sweet chili, soy garlic (you get two but we ended up with three) and pickled radish. Sauces were all awesome, different palates will like different ones. I liked all three, though I think the honey mustard was my favourite, bio guy can't decide.
