10th January 2020

Checking out a fun new snack spot at Ella Melbourne that we've been fascinated with. A skewers place, so many options including all the shrooms, some meat, dumplings and all those things you can get in young tofu soup (at least I think that's what it's call). They also have all those weird ingredients like tripe and chicken feet!

You can get your skewers grilled or fried (we let the chef choose) and varying levels of spicy (none please).

We had (L-R) enoki mushrooms, tiny prawn dumplings, chicken, fried oyster mushrooms. Lightly seasoned, it good and a try once snack.

Might be back for sweet potato fries w sour prune powder $7 and fried banana $5, if they use the lady finger one. They do mains too, though they're all foreign and I didn't recognize any of the dishes.

Damage: $2.80 each, min 4
But I bought a Groupon for $8

Service was friendly. Plenty of seats in the area.

Just Dessert @ Hui Lau Shan 许留山 @ Wednesday, January 08, 2020

A Sunday in January 2020

Dessert at Hui Lan Shan, an Asian dessert place near Melbourne Central, attached to a vending machine arcade 'The Claw'. The same one is uphill Bourke St heading towards Spring St. Lovely Monster.

There's no English but I think this is a karaoke booth. They have all the chance games here.

If you pick up something enough times you might get lucky.
But it's designed for you to loose.

Mango Romance $11

The dish we'd travel to have was sold out so we had a mango romance instead at $11.
3 mini bowls and a bonus for an insta follow. Flavorless chewy white balls and jelly with mango and one dish had mango nectar. The mango ice cream was a little icy, but I didn't like the jelly or white balls so overall a waste of money. Should have just bought mango ice cream.

Service was friendly. Can't read the receipt though as it's not in English.

Don't think we're a fan of asian desserts that don't contain matcha/black sesame.

South Wharf Eats - Bangpop Thai @ Tuesday, January 07, 2020

Late December 2019/Early January 2020

Pad Thai Tuesday Lunch $10
Thai stir fried rice noodles with tofu, egg, garlic, chives,
kuung, bean sprouts, crispy shallots, fresh chili & peanuts.

Don't think we can link a review for zomato as we've been here a few times, the first was as part of a progressive lunch. Since then we've been back for $10 Pad Thai Tuesdays which now is lunch only (normally $17, without meat). Also a couple times with 50% off via dimmi.

Sunday

 Calamari, corn fritters and tofu

Thai corn fritters $12 - Corn fritters w/ lettuce & sweet chili sauce. Floury with a sweet sauce. I don't recommend these, they were quite disappointing and I'd like a calorie refund.

Silken Egg Tofu $9
Deep fried egg tofu w/ tamarind sauce & black rice vinegar onion.

Nina had calamari and silky egg tofu which was nice.

Banana Blossom Chicken $26 + $4.50 Rice  = $30.50
Grilled chicken w/ banana blossom, shallots, coconut cream, chili & thai herbs

A bit spicy but good, would recommend but personally a hint too spicy for me. I do find toothpaste spicy though.

A lovely spot by the water for a long lunch, though you're paying for that view. On Thai food it's too spicy for me, but I do recommend that Tuesday Pad Thai lunch special.

Friday 30th Nov 2018

We've got a set of pictures missing, so this was the closest to the front door I could get.

Located on the way to the beach on a tram route that comes every 20mins is KUU Cafe + Japanese Kitchen, a cute little cafe that we always see on our way to the Gasworks. It took years, but we finally made it!

The menu looks delicious, they're open from breakfast till dinner (most days) and have weekend or brunch only dishes (which makes us sad, as we're not morning people nor willing to line up for brunch). As well as sounding amazing the menu has beautiful illustrations.

We wanted a bento, but by Friday 8pm they were sold out, might want to go earlier in the day for that one, this happened on a Thursday by 6pm too.

Kakiage Shredded Veggie Tempura $5.50
Sweet potato, carrot, onion, green bean, pumpkin

Starting off with entrees, this tempura while being deep fried was super light,
crumbles (like cannoli) when bitten into and was overall really good.

Creamy Crab Croquettes $7
These were also really really good!

Sashimi Salmon Salad $16
Avocado, leafy greens, cucumber, with onion soy dressing + parmasen (unexpected)

Omusoba w Chicken (Dinner Only) $16.5
Yakisoba noodles wrapped (draped over with) in an omelette topped with
kewpie mayo, bbq sauce (tonkatsu), bonito flakes, aonori, pickled ginger

With all those sauces and toppings this dish was delicious!
And no it didn't taste like instant noodles at all. I'd get this again for sure.

As they were closing we got dessert to go and had it at a park.

Japanese Cheesecake $6.80
Just like the one at Shyun, but not served as cubes this cheesecake
was amazing, I'd say it's like uncle tetsu but better, not wet.

Yuzu Tart Slice $6.80
Think lemon tart but just with yuzu and cream, yum!

Service was friendly, they take bookings. Can't wait to return, wished they were in the city or close to us though. We'd like to brunch though I can't travel to the other side of the city for brunch XD

Friday 22nd March 2019

Back for afternoon tea, of a tea pannacotta and yuzu lime soda.

Pictures currently on an adventure somewhere...

Thursday 2nd Jan 2020

A crazy early dinner at Kuu a cute Japanese cafe that's been on our list forever. This is my third visit. The bento is always sold out.

The yuzu lime soda was perfect.

Teriyaki salmon with housemade sauce and mash potato $20

Unexpectedly came with brown rice, but I love that there was a salad for a balanced meal. There was a diagram, but I didn't actually notice the rice as it wasn't described.

What he ate. He doesn't do comments. It's like to be soba or udon.

Dessert anyone?

Japanese Cheesecake $7

Finishing with a beautiful crumbly but moist cheesecake, uncle tetsu but good! Cause to me Tetsu is wet... and I've made jap cheesecake before, but it's been quite some life times.

A lovely local gem, dates worthy he says... and yet he never took me here XD but then again I discovered it not him.

Damage $60
My part $33

Can't wait to return again, perhaps one day even on a weekend!

Christmas High Tea @ The Hotel Windsor @ Friday, January 03, 2020

Thursday 2nd January 2020

A late high tea lunch at The Hotel Windsor. A lovely table for two by the window. Air con, nice music. The other year we had the pleasure of staying in a suite here and loved it, the breakfast buffet so calming with the classical music (quite rare) the exclusiveness of it all (till people arrive in backwards baseball caps and singlets *shudder*. It's a bit of that old world magic that we see glimpses of sometimes.

Starting with the top tier, tiny canapes, they're nice but I have no idea what they are.

Sandwiches were nice, quite good I love cheese and tomato chutney.
Missing a chicken one though.

Cakes were nice, eclair a hint dense.
That chocolate tart was really good!
The passionfruit coconut one too.

Onto scones, a fruity one and a plain. So light and fluffy!! Jas loved the strawberry jam,
I found the cream a little more firm to spread than preferred.

A lovely afternoon, a try once thing for me (jas has been wanting to dine here for ages, naturally he was an hour late and had not a care in the world), other places are cheaper/and there's more food. Funny thing - quite a few places places we love have closed. But a place we recommend is Hatter and hare $70 similar price yes, but there's so much more food.

Great service from the guy at the door.

Tip - Wait for red balloon gift vouchers are on sale

Damage - We got 15% off and actually paid like $64 (normally $75).

Where's your favourite place for High Tea?
