90s Week @ Royal Stacks (Collins St) @ Thursday, January 16, 2020

A Friday in Jan 2020

Celebrating Royal Stack's 3rd anniversary they had a 90s week with 90s prices!
Back when a $20 felt like a $50 and life was simple.

We ordered pretty much all the things on the special menu, he had that huge double burger with a shake, and the girls shared the 'double up kicks pack' that came in a cool shoebox. The entire theme is a reference to a 90a movie called 'Coming to America' that I vaguely recall.

Hello 30c soft serves (not as creamy as mcd) and $10 meals (double burger).
That 30c cone, running faster than me to catch that morning training!

The McDowell, a copy of the Big Mac I'm told. Jas is of little words.

The fries were perfect mcd fries, so addictive and not too salty. The burger was good
but not amazing, new girl prefer Betty though Huxtaburger is our (my) favorite.

Soda not pictured but $20 set for two included a burger, fries and shake each.

The line was long-ish though moved quickly.

Unlikely to return, not really a burger person.
But I loved the novelty factor of it all!

Damage: $35 for 3 people. The box, a burger, shake and cone. A very good deal! I think a Happy Meal is like $8 these days or something.

My therapist suggests that my review is biased as I'm bitter about not being invited to the party XD What he doesn't seem to know if that I pay for 95% of the food we write about.

Taco Tuesday @ Black Toro (Windsor) @ Wednesday, January 15, 2020

A Thursday in Jan 2020

There's a Black Toro in town, the only Mexican well Modern Mexican but as long as it's not Taco Bill we're happy (yes we've tried it, idk how they're still alive). Checking out the bustling second location in Windsor which open just last July (2019).

I've always been curious about though the chance to dine here didn't arrive till now, thanks to 50% off via 'The Fork' aka new Dimmi.

Inside it's longer than wide with a front and back room, the back is where groups sit. The front sports a huge mural of the Day of the Dead girl and the optimal lighting and background is facing it. Trendy pop music plays, I prefer classical or smooth jazz, but that's not the vibe of Chapel st or almost anywhere sadly.

1.Corn on a cob, with chipotle mayo, queso fresco, lime.

Not a dish to be ordered on a date, but perfect on a table for one tonight. So messy, but so good! Tiny but delicious with plenty of sauce that leaves my lips tingly.

2. Snapper ceviche - Cucumber, avocado, black lime dressing.
Absolutely amazing! Tiny perfect cubes ingredients.

3. Short rib taco - Hard shell, spicy sauce, radish. Sweet juicy full of flavours and contrasts. Wow! Totally unexpected as well, I didn't actually order this :P btw this is canape size

4. Fish taco - Soft corn tortilla chipotle mayo, cabbage and herb slaw.

Delicious normal sized, a hint of tingling lips. An apple slaw would have taken it to the absolute must order level.

5. Wagyu beef sliders (these came in a pair) - Cheese, pickles, miso onion, ketchup.

It was perfectly tiny (expected) and delicious! I know know where to go in town when I'm after a burger but tiny. It definitely satisfied that slider craving (I'm easily influenced, modern family's second latest episode).

6. Tres leaches cake. 3 milks cakes with dulce le leche, fresh strawberries.

This serves 3, unlike the other dishes we had tonight and was delicious like everything else! We once had it many years ago and loved it, but have yet to find a recipe (it's so much more amazing than our American poke cakes). So moist but not wet and soggy, pretty good the next day too and only a hint dry. The white icing is a coconut. It was so good!

Everything was really good, small servings but good, I'm delighted to say it's table for one friendly, as I ate almost everything you see. Either on the night or the next more. It was much better than the last mex-ish snack bar we went to the other week by Prahran station.

Service was very friendly from frenchie, no judgment for ordering 6 tapas sized dishes for one. Can't wait to return with le beau! And order all six dishes again.
We rarely give out 5 stars, but this place deserves it! Though we eat out a lot, so it might be more of a monthly #tacotuesday thing budget wise. .

Damage $88 though we paid $44 with 50% off via dimmi). So worth it.
Note - they do have feed me menus, but I knew what I wanted.

Feb 2020

Just wanted to share more pictures, this is our third visit within two months. We sat upstairs. Service was just as good, unlike lighting for pics in the corner. Nina was/is super excited about the three milk cakes and came just for that. Jas & I came for everything I ordered last time.

Baskin Robbins (Camberwell) @ Tuesday, January 14, 2020

January 2020

Choc Chip Cookie Dough - Vanilla ice cream loaded with
chunks of chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate chips.

The local ice cream shop, the one and only in this small town of Camberwell, or at least I thought it was small till we moved to Hawthorne where nothing is open on a Sunday.

So many flavours, though the love potion is a winner, also the hokey pokey. Compared to all the fancy handmade ice cream places this feels very old school, like Wendy's with bright colours and fake flavours.

Alas with a free birthday scoops offer we couldn't resist getting a scoop, the girl serving recommended the cookie dough and it was a winner!

Open late it's perfect to grab a scoop walking from the movies to the station on a summer evening.

Dumplings @ Din Tai Fung (Emporrium) @ Monday, January 13, 2020

March 2019 - Present

Din Tai Fung (DTF) opened up quite sometime ago above the Emporium (new mall) though we've never really gotten around to it till now. Mainly to avoid the disappointment that so man dishes have pork, though we've discovered many dishes don't have pork, yay!

It's a very popular place, absolutely huge, the biggest chinese place I've ever been, with plenty of space, some tables have a laundry hamper for your bags, air con, air, a dates worthy atmosphere, and a little jazz. Overheard someone say it's chinese food for white people, costs more cause you're paying for atmosphere, but I'd pay for that. As oppose to people yelling at me, sitting on stools in an eatery balancing my bags. I do love dumplings but for all those reasons I'd never dine at a chinese place not in a nice mall alone.

How it works is you go up to the podium, grab a buzzer and a menu to fill out. However at the picture menu cause that's the one with the prices. Soon you get called up, podium girl with a work name circles your table on a map, and you're in. Smart people order as they are seated, though there's a menu book at the table (with prices).

March 2019

Our first visit was late one evening, we ha potstickers, truffle fried rice, chicken & corn soup, a bao, drunken chicken (cold) and mango pudding for dessert. Surprizingly I only have photos of the food. Didn't take notes on our first visit.

July 2019

Beef and egg truffle oil rice, smells amazing! More of a side to something else I felt rather than a dish on it's own. Needs more stuff in it.

Crab and corn soup, a twist on the classic chicken and corn.

Needs pepper. Wouldn't get again.

Chicken mushrooms pot stickers, quite nice though I'm missing chicken and prawn dumplings which they don't do here, we'll get chicken dumplings next time.

Chocolate lava bao, oh wow, how do you eat this? It was pretty cool and a bit messy!

Taro spring rolls with sesame, so I ordered the wrong dish, this was meant to be a taro bao. It was savory...

Tuesday night, I've never been given a map to go find my own seat before, but it was busy almost a full house.

December 2019

Seafood potstickers so good! Not too salty but just right though the bottom of the dumpling (are potstickers dumplings?) were a little oily. Would get again. Order these asap.

We actually had dessert first as pot stickers take 20mins to make. Mango pudding for two whoops, just the salted egg lava bun and lychee drink (with mint hence green) would have been enough.

Damage $36

January 2020

First one in on a Monday night, 5pm when they opened in between work and the studio. People flowed in quickly. We got the perfect seat by the window above the mall with perfect lighting.

Very few places have a bag hook let alone a laundry hamper!

Chicken and mushroom dumplings with special shallot sauce. So good.

Crispy fried Prawns with mayo and pineapple. Sounds strange but so good! Eat fast though, it's not nice cold. This is meant to be shared, whoops.

Golden lava mini bun, with a salted egg filling. The perfect size dessert.

Service fast and friendly. Yes we'll be back though it's pricey so we don't dine here without an offer from dimmi (50% off) or Liven tbh.

This place fascinates me, modern Chinese with big airy spaces. Clean and nice, which is reflected in the prices. Not really a fan of lack of prices on order forms though. Though it's quite efficient the system, get a buzzer thing, order forms, sit down ready to order.
