Much Ado About Nothing @ The Pop-Up Globe @ Wednesday, November 07, 2018

Up up far and high on a hill was the globe beside the bowl.
Inside it's smaller than expected, and there's carpet instead of grass yay! As we're only little we got a spot at the front. And jas accompanied me to keep me in check.

What an amazing show it was tonight at the @popupglobe ! It rained and we were totally soaked (cling wrap wasn't my style) but it was an epic experience. .
.
We had groundlings tix ($20 tix) which meant we had to stand for the entire time, and my feet hurt!! But it was carpeted so not too bad, and no where near as crowded as comic con. The sound despite lack of modern technology was superb too.
.
Ridiculously hilarious. Claudio is a fool, not sure why Hero (who's stunning, looks like Gossip Girl) married him, though she's pretty darn generic too as a character. But it's a comedy, and like my favourite stories they all get married in the end.
.

P.S. Leave your tall friends at home. And bring bug spray!!

Thursday 23rd Nov

Lunching at Collective Espresso opposite Camberwell Station, the most publicized brunch spot in Camberwell. The one of the only brunchy spots that was here before we left town, since we moved Camberwell is now brunch central on this side of town.

At 3pm it was nice and quiet, it was nice outside, slightly warm with a breeze.
R&B played over the outdoor speakers.
They don't do matcha lattes.

Inside this place is small! Small for the area. There's bar stools and communal tables. Elbow room - sounds like a name for a popular brunch spot, very hipster.

The menu seems a bit limited though features all the breakfast essentials, one dessert food porn (waffles or hotcakes) and a couple burgers.

Usually I get the mushroom dish though I didn't this time as I'm not an English muffin fan.
Instead I had the corn and zucchini fritters served with a soft poached egg. Which oozed everywhere - in a good way. The ring of sauce is beetroot. Paprika and cumin were among the spices in the fritters. Topped off with salsa, avocado and thin slices of baby beets. It was very good though missing that special something, that a spicy salsa or amazing dip like spread could have added. Pretty good but not quite there.

Is it Tuesday? I'm losing myself and time again. Turns out it's Thursday. Taco Thursday!

Andy had the pulled pork tacos, a set of 3 of which 2 came with poached eggs, no flow though they were heading towards boiled. The tacos were fresh and spicy, the pulled pork was tender and juicy and succulent.

Gravity Waffles! That's what everyone's ordering. As it's as good as it looks! But I'd like to add colored meringues with gold lust. The popcorn was chewy, not so fresh this might be like the parsley - deco only. Popcorn was nasty and painful said Andy XD. The waffles were soft and fluffy, my fear of dense waffles can be very real. Waffles were good soft and warm very nice to compliments with fresh fruit - Andy. Pavlova fruit and poppyseed cream surrounded and sat atop of waffle stack with golden syrup in the middle. I'd like to add lemon zest to the cream.

It was a delight and definitely recommended if you're in town.

As collective espresso is very popular a line is expected. Worth the wait? I'm not sure as we're not brunchy people. I'd imagine the modern music might be a bit louder on weekends.

Service was very friendly.

Melbourne Night Noodle Markets 2017 @ Monday, November 05, 2018

November 2017

November brings us the annual 'Night Noodle Markets'! With different lanterns most years and prime estate at the top of the hill.

MR MIYAGI $15 - Peking duck taco Peking duck, sushi rice,
spring onion, cucumber, kim chi, hoisin plum sauce in a nori taco shell

Hard to eat without a knife and fork // wet wipes. As usual the duck is on top and rice under it, because of the holder you'd eat top down rather than side on, so you'd eat all the duck then rice. Though fortunately the sauce is throughout the taco. It's pretty good though hard to eat.

GELATO MESSINA - Oh-No-Giri $10
 – Green tea gelato & pistachio mousse dipped in rice bubbles & white chocolate

Like everyone else said the white chocolate was very sweet (but not THAT sweet! though I am American), and so it overpowered the green tea ice cream which you have a bite of everything. The pistachio mousse was also weaken, and I couldn't identify that it was.

Kamikaze Katsu $12
– Deep fried gelato katsu sandwich! Sudachi lime gelato coated in red velvet cake
and panko crumbs sandwiched in fluffy white bread with yuzu sauce

Well the lime was strong and yuzu combo so good. But I didn't eat it straight away so it melted and went everywhere. The flavour combo was weird, deep fried and white bread, nope.

It's not every year that there are seats!

You'll want to be a VIP, especially when it rains.

Fun & Games

Evening

HOY PINOY $13
Inihaw na manok – Chicken skewers in traditional soy glaze (gf. ef)

Smokey BBQed chicken, it was tiny, like 8 pieces of chicken on two skewers for $13... but so good. As we don't BBQ at home, this is an annual thing. Next year (as I write this) it goes up to $13.50.

SPANTHAI $13 - Fresh mango & sticky rice with coconut sauce (v)

A favourite dessert with ripe fresh Australian mango and coconuty sticky rice
with sesame. So good, we had this last year and came back for it.

As always we had a great time, trying new desserts and finding classics we love.

Local Eats - Kenji Japanese @ Sunday, November 04, 2018

Tuesday 21st November

Dinner at Kenji in Burwood Arcade. Being in an arcade we've never seen this place and recalled friends recommending it when after local Japanese.

Being Japanese expect small spaces (the exception being fine dinning). Bags on the floor or hanging off tables. It was completely full at one point tonight.

The front bit looks like a takeaway shop though there's a restaurant attached to it
It was warm and crowded. We need the air con.

Takoyaki $7.50
Perfectly creamy w squid in the middle. Most of the time it's shrimp

No 7. Sushi box raw $18

Wasabi in the nigrini, tempura was nice. A good mix of fresh and fried. On the fence about getting it again. Came with miso soup, not too salty

Green Tea Thickshake. Sm. $3

Wow that is thick! Wait for it to melt... not as strong as samurai but a good drink/dessert

Service was slow as it was busy but friendly
The total including tomorrow's lunch came to almost $40

Beef hayashi rice $12/cheaper takeaway
It was good though nothing amazing, might get again.

Wed 31st Jan 2018

A quick dinner at Kenji.

Egg omelette sushi $3 - A bit light on seasoning and it was very pale...

Grilled beef curry $12 - Very good, the beef was tender and there was one piece of potato and carrot XD Good serving size. They don't have Beef hayashi rice on the menu anymore, so this is the recommended replacement.

No bookings required for one, $15 card min. As a single diner we sat at the sushi bar.

Week 12th March

Takeaway Teriyaki Chicken $10. A huge serving, it was very good. On par with DonDon I'd say. It's cheaper takeaway. Might get again.

Sadly we never ate at Kenji after that, not because of bad experiences or anything but because they were fined $25,000 for multiple Food Act breaches (October 10, 2017) second time in four years.
