Dine with Dimmi - Queen St Rescue @ Tuesday, January 31, 2017 Sunday 15th January A Sunday Dinner after work someone recommended Queen St Rescue a block from Shanghai St, uphill so west side up past Hardware Lane. Described a "hip urban space" it's not my style, but we're open to trying new things.
Interesting choice of deco, there's booths and bar height tables too.
The lunch deals look good, there's always better deals for lunch in the city.
That plate is HUGE! I have a hat that big, we didn't wear it today though.
Mushroom Risotto $18
Assorted slow roasted mushroom, nutty pesto
with truffle oil & shaved reggiano parmesan cheese (GF)
To me this is still just rice. Not creamy and cooked enough for me. But everyone like it differently. Some like it oily?! It's not the dish it's me. The flavours were nice though.
Modern Mayan Achiote Chicken Salad $18
w/crispy Cajun sweet potato, corn kernel, kidney bean,
shredded purple cabbage, Spanish onion & chipotle adobo mayo (GF)
You can't go wrong with a salad, unless the dressing is gross (Sea Salt I'm looking at you). This was huge and delicious! With a creamy dressing it had all the flavours and textures, though the kidney beans were interesting, as they're starchy. I love real chicken! Diet chicken is mushy (Lite n' Easy), sweet potato is always awesome too. I would have added cheese, feta but salt reduced. Service was great, friendly and understanding. The restaurant got quite busy during dinner. We'll be back again for lunch, and perhaps more salad. I'd definitely get this one again, though perhaps not at $18. $13 for lunch, yes!
Do you like salads? What's your favourite salad?
Bangpop Thai on South Wharf @ Sunday, January 29, 2017 Thursday 12th January
Dinner on the Wharf at Bangpop in the Moonlight.
South Wharf, dinning by the Yarra. Cool breezes. Loving the location!
On the water front. Oh how lovely it would be to have an office here!
Looks like we'll be back in a couple weeks for dinner!
Update - We came back for a Tuesday dinner, here's the post.
I wish more places did spice ratings! I wouldn't have thought Thai food to be spicy! I was thinking more coconut and fish. When I think spicy I think Indian and Mexican.
Miang Kham - Betel Leaf $4
Betel leaf w/ roasted coconut & peanut, dried shrimp, ginger and chili
An explosion of flavours and textures! Ginger was prominent. Just like last time "It is one of the most amazing things I have tasted! Incredible in that it was complex but also the textural elements complimented each other. It was crunchy (peanuts) but soft (shrimp/prawns), and involved all the taste buds; sweet, salty and spicy! So what's in it? Ruby grapefruit, lime, coconut, palm syrup, sugar, peanut, shrimp, ginger, shallot, fish sauce and more. An amazing punch of flavours and texture!" Table for one please. The waiter sighs on the inside, revealed by a micro-expression, for there are no tables for one, only four or more with a menu designed for sharing. But what about me? On my own. I'm surrounded by people at event and live in a boarding house, I think it's enough people for now.
The Special Menu - Changes Often
Som Tum Bpou Nim Krob $24
Crispy fried papaya with soft shell crab salad
with lime, dried shrimp, garlic and chilli dressing
Spotting the camera, this was what the second waiter, the one serving the area, recommended. He assured me it was delicious, and not just food porn when I asked. :P Often food porn is brunch and all about artificial colours and dessert for breakfast. I never had thai like this! And wonder what the traditional thai dishes would be like. Are they always this amazing?
The View - There's more river to the left. :P
Desserts - Not listed online. Damn everything looks good.
Khao Nieaw Ma Mang $13
Fresh mango w coconut sticky rice, toasted sesame seeds and coconut sorbet
The sorbet was unlike any other. Not like fresh popstic, but a creamy coconut. Like a hug! I loved it! Not sure about the shredded coconut on top, as I love my sticky rice with sesame. I also love pandan sticky rice. I had a neighbour who cut mangoes like that, I love it though can't *knives are sharp and scary*.
Dessert by the Yarra. It was lovely.
Coconut Vanilla Panna Cotta $9
Served w rosella flower and kaffir lime syrup jello, palm sugar honeycomb
We couldn't resist a good panna cotta, as mine either is too soft or hard like jelly, the milk and gelatin layer also separates when I make it. This one was perfect, though I'm not sure about the layer of sour jelly or crazy sticky between my molars honeycomb. I like it but didn't love it, wouldn't order it again. Though if you prefer less sweet desserts this is for you. I love the beautiful pops of colour, but unlike all the brunch food porn it's all real natural colours and flavours. The bill came to $54 which was pretty reasonable for a mini entree, main and two desserts. Thanks to an offer via Dimmi we got 50% off and paid $27. Service was very good, from our waiter. Will we be back? Yes! This is a spot I'd take friends and family when they come to visit.
Hello Again, Milkcow Organic Ice Cream! @ Saturday, January 28, 2017 Charlie dined as a guest of Milkcow but also returned. Milkcow, Korean organic ice cream with a soft milky texture (soft serve texture, but higher quality) opened up about three weeks ago on main street (Swanston) beside Starbucks, after a pop-up at The Strand last year. Serving premium soft serve-y ice cream made from organic Australian milk, they're open from 1pm till 10-11.30pm it's the perfect place for dessert after dinner! Running for the train? There's a takeaway window!
It's cash only at the moment, but they shall take card in the future.
So many toppings... you can also eat in if not on the go.
The Menu *click to enlarge* What's popular? Overall cookies n' cream (our favourite)
along with the originals and the Santorini and mont blanc for food porn points.
Along with their range of ice cream there's waffles for the cooler nights and milkshakes! Under the chilled menu. They're $7. Nine flavours to choose from.
With the honey (in the two original flavours) Milkcow uses local Berringa honey.
Fairy floss flavours vary and once there was pandan flavour! Can't wait till that comes back!
Santorini – Oreo Crumb, Pistachio Hazelnuts, Italian
Tropical Syrup, Blueberry Fairy Floss Umbrella.
We had the 'Santorini' with a huge cloud of blueberry fairy floss. It reminds me of an Alice in Wonderland creation, the caterpillar's cloud. I like how unlike other places the fairy floss didn't detract from main feature, the ice cream. The soft serve had a fresh light taste. No yucky cloggy after taste (as you get with McFlurries). Lightly sweetened cream like taste, like the blue lidded one at the supermarket. At the bottom was a surprise, an oreo base! Cookies n cream! The milkshake would be amazing with this base. We can't wait to return! And we did later that very week.
Cookies n' Cream Shake $7
Have you been to Milkcow recently? Which flavour is your favourite?
Liven Eats - Ya Souv @ Friday, January 27, 2017 Monday 9th January Ya Souv is on the main street around the corner from Glenferrie Station, and opposite Lido Movies. Located in a student village area we were hoping to find a $15-ish deal, but there wasn't one.
The Menu - there's more desserts in this picture than the online menus.
$15 for a Beer & Souv. I'd prefer a main/side deal though.
Minimalist with bold colours, looks like a fun place!
YA MENA $12.50
slow cooked lamb w. chips, caramelized onion, parsley & grainy mustard aioli
Had the ya mena with caramelized onions, lamb, parsley, chips and. .. the lamb was juicy. Meat overload for me. Same price as Jimmy Grants but bigger. A meat feast I need a salad to go with it. It was good though fairly average, and smaller than those local ones I've heard about. The baklava ($5) was quite large, serves too. Not too sweet though fairly average. First day back so half the dessert menu was out. I was hoping to try something new, but it wasn't in stock. Service fairly average, the blonde sa didn't like me (yes the one pictured above). The manager was friendlier. There's minimal people interaction, you order and get a number and the food arrives, not sure why, maybe because the place was practically empty that it felt a bit unfriendly. Overall? Average. Sunday 19th March Soft sov wrap with my favourite chicken honey mustard, coriander (just a touch) and caramelized onions! It was perfect. This is the same one I had last time. For $15 I had a sov (bigger than Jimmy's) paired with feta/oregano fries it was a meal. Crispy chips, for $3.50 it's quite a good deal for chips (if you want fries, McD is down the street) especially as you have the option for them plain or with free feta/oregano. They come in three sizes, the smallest is my medium. Medium is to be shared between two. Through the Liven App we received $20 credit to spend. We also got cashback, not literally but like app credits to encourage future use. Want in? Use my referral code: |
