Does the Mikado Deliver? @ Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Tuesday 10th May

That feeling when you bought something on Thursday and now it's Monday and it's half the price you paid for... But at the same time you know it's ok, because a lot can happen in three days meaning that it might be on sale now, but they probably don't have it in your size. Unless you were an employee and knew about the future sale and hide the item somewhere.

Today we were off to re-shoot a picture for a potential gallery thing, but only to discover they've closed down! NOOOOOOOOOO! I had the picture but a glitch/virus wiped out a lot of pictures in storage.

Nearby were two bookshops, struggling under the weight of the first I didn't make it to the second. Vintage books and something new. The oldest of them with the leather cover and gold edges will be butchered to create the perfect book box. Jas is horrified, claiming it's a classic.

Class was unproductive. Friday 9am meeting, gotta leave the house at 7.30 to get there in time then back for a 2pm meeting.

Pho for Dinner out West

The night was young and so I took a nap then saw a movie, 'The Dressmaker' with Kate Winslet. With all that makeup she looks forever young and beautiful. Her friendship with the sargent and journey were things we watched keenly. We weren't fond of the boy though, because he was too good for the town and didn't belong (and not because his family was the poorest in town). In attempt to get the town to forgive her for something they claim she did, she makes dresses for the women. Turning a duckling into a swan, though she does a 180-ish and with her new found beauty/style she becomes of the gossiping bitchy towns folk. The main leading lady when it comes to fashion. Though in reality no one dresses like that daily, it's not practical and the fabric is expensive.

Revenge was amusing to watch, how the chemist met his end, and the towns' end. With the chemist, the hunchback I don't know why he runs home head first into a pillow his wife's holding? Oh and the brownies Molly & Tilly give her, pretty sure they've got pot in them. The evil mayor met an end at the hands of his (something) wife. And the whole town had it coming, the end was good. It's how I would have done it. But there's always the question of, do we gather everyone in a place and burn them to the ground, or do they live and suffer?

Have you seen 'The Dressmaker'? Are you going to see the exhibition?

We'll be sharing lots of pictures from the event for those who couldn't make it.

I'd hate to live in a small town, as I'm pretty sure I'd be seen as the witch and be burnt at the stake. And the first to point an accusing finger would be mrs morman, and of course morman would be the one to light the fire.

Thursday

Some days are harder then others, today and yesterday were those kinda days, with productivity being low till the last minute. Presentations went well, one subject is winding up with reports due on Monday and two weeks to go.

Crepes for Dinner out East

Friday

Friday the 13th with a full moon, time for a coven meeting!

We made it to school by 9am! This is an extremely rare thing as we're 2hrs away, the guy arrived after, but the girl sent her apologies. She had been in a car accident, pictures or it didn't happen. Ok, maybe a description would have been enough...

Many run throughs, exhausting. The roleplay was two girls getting bitchy, but with the guys it was easier in that they tried to understand each other instead of having a typical girl fight. Why is it that there are mean girls, and they're common, but boys are chilled?

That looks like an interesting event. I wonder if schools do workshops on the topic.

Saturday

Four events, one day, can we do it? Yes we can! But then we napped on the way home and missed the stop, fortunately we're near the end of the line. Rewind.

I am not a morning person. I struggle unlike small children and grandparents, but still we weren't too late to the opera. Opera on film with subtitles, just the way I like it! It may be in English and I love musical theatre, but sometimes struggle.

The Mikado, while set in Japan featured all English characters, schoolgirls, hotel staff (bellhops and maid) and the council. G&S is about silliness, and fun, and ... mocking the powerful, and accepting the fundamental absurdity of life.

It "was the second longest run for any work of musical theatre and one of the longest runs of any theatre piece up to that time [1885]" and is the most frequently performed Savoy Opera, and we can see why!

Lots for make-up for everyone, with comedy and an alls well that ends well conclusion. It was a very good show that we enjoyed, and highly recommend. It's for everyone, well not kids, and not only grandparents. The later was the intended audience hence time slot.

Lunch was a taste testing mini-event, top secret.

Next we were off to a sorta farewell to Helados Jauja, while I can't say we go there often, we always stop by after a movie at the art house cinema nearby.

Ice-cream Appreciation Masterclass: a Sensory Indulgence

After all that ice cream we needed a savory hearty meal, so stopped by Mantra Lounge. It's vegan, I'm not vegan but the lasagna's quite good. Huge servings for $9 this slice (the size of a take-away box) serves two with a salad.

Off to the theatre, The Orchid & Crow. Sounds pretty/interesting but that part was creepy as. A story about a testicle cancer survivor, that must be terrifying. I'm slightly curious/think that you could always get a fake one put in? Steve on SATC had the same thing and he talked about it.

Sunday

Sundays are best spent relaxing, perhaps a picnic or time spent in the gardens. Taking a more relaxed approach today (yesterday we went to four events) we took the day off from the usual hustle and bustle, and spent the afternoon at Como House with Deliveroo.

How was your week?

Eating Local - Grill'd Camberwell @ Sunday, May 15, 2016

Sunday 8th May

Grill'd was buzzing tonight, with 20min wait times (for your order to arrive) after securing a table and ordering. There was a BOGOF offer that's why. I haven't been to Grill'd for ages, and our last memory of it was the opening of the Yarraville branch (2012).

Bird & Brie $12.50
Grilled chicken breast, brie cheese, thick cranberry sauce, salad & herbed mayo

Since Grill'd appeared on the burger scene many notable burger joints have popped up offering stacks of patties, shiny fluffy buns and beautifully melted cheese. Pure #foodporn Grill'd is different in that the buns aren't so light, fluffy and beautiful. The focus is healthi-er burgers and giving back to the community. So the bun mightn't be as delicious, but you won't be "I need a salad" mood for the next week or so. Hence it gets a thumbs up from us, but so does our favourite burger joint, Huxtaburger - as a sometimes food.

What do we love Grill'd for? Their chips are still the best. For thick cut chips that is. With all those dried herbs dipped in sweet chili mayo. Yum!

Yuzu Cuisine Fusion Japanese @ Friday, May 13, 2016

Tuesday 3rd March

Lunch at Yuzu Cuisine, Modern Japanese, in a hidden lane that not many would stumble upon, in Church Lane around the corner from the food court where Mason Dixon resigns, beside the Oak Hotel.

Traditional Japanese flavours infused with modern Australian, says the website. This is somewhere I'd take morman who I want to introduce to Japanese food, as it's finer (fancier) than the usual places we go, and you won't be  greeted with a loud “Irasshaimase". Instead there's mood lighting and a full house of suits for lunch. A place where you could have a lunch meeting, though I prefer for it to be just me, the camera and food.

Some guys are really into burgers, but me, I love my bentos! Lunch sets, known as the express sets here are only available for lunch, though you can get them take away for dinner.

There are four non-veg/pork options (fish, chicken, beef and tofu) that all come with rice, miso soup and a salad. The recommend one was Teriyaki Chicken, so we went with that. It also came with a veg. spring roll and sashimi.

Teriyaki Chicken Set $18
with veg. spring roll and sashimi & rice, miso soup, salad

The eating order is as follows: miso (traditionally drank, no spoons), sashimi, spring roll, and them chicken/rice/salad. Starting with the lighter dishes.

Everything was delicious and very good, the sashimi was fresh, spring roll sliced just so that you can see what's inside, and a good ratio of chicken to rice. The sauce was a bit salty if consumed alone, but was fine with the rice.

Service was very good, the hostess was very friendly and no one judged me for taking pictures XD With a crowd of suits in groups no one really noticed me.

Tuesday 8th March

Dinner at the office, Yuzu delivered.

Wafu Eye Fillet Beef Set $20

with chicken tatsuta age and sashimi

A balanced soy (sauce) based marinade and soft tender wafu eye fillet, atop rice with a salad (too much dressing for me) was tonight's dinner, in a takeaway bento box from Yuzu.

The box itself reflected the modern fusion of Yuzu, using a cardboard box rather than the usual red plastic bento box. Instead it reminded me of the noodle boxes you see in movies, though I have yet to experience that myself.

Unlike with the chicken set this one came with chicken tatsuta age (fried chicken) instead of a spring roll. Deep fried chicken is always welcome.

The eye filet was great, but the salad had too much dressing.

Thursday 17th March

The first time I've ever tipped in Australia, because he rode on a bicycle while carrying two cups, think coffee cups. That takes skill.

After a third visit/meal from Yuzu I'm ready to do a full review, on bentos.

Edamame $5
Instead of popcorn for a movie tonight we had boiled beans, and then ate half a pack of twisties... This is like buying a tub of nuts, probably not going to finish them in one shot, best to be shared between 2-3 people

Yuzu Iced Tea $4.80
A refreshing light citrus iced tea, potentially needs more sugar, though it's slightly sweet.

Butter Fish Set $19

But first takoyaki, creamy octopus balls w a small shrimp in the middle. These were nice and three was the perfect number.

Once again the salad had too much dressing and was a bit salty, next time I'll ask for the dressing on the side.

The fish itself was soft, white boneless with a smooth pleasant texture. Lightly marinaded it would go well with rice and salad, to balance out the saltiness. I quite liked it, and being fish it was lighter than the chicken and beef.

So of the three which is my favourite? I'm going to have to go with the beef, though the chicken does come with a spring roll. And I think spring rolls should be as easy to find as chips!

Friday 6th May

Between 5-7pm it's happy hour with $10-12 cocktails and $10 for a selection of 5 canapes. There also some chicken skewers (5) for $10. On this occasion we came for the entrees before dinner and a trip to the theatre.

Being 6pm on a Friday the place was quite saw for a handful of early diners or snackers, and a couple at the bar. As the dish we were going to order was designed as nibbles for drinks, we sat at the bar. Coincidentally there was also good lighting at the bar. :P

Happy Hour Combo $10

  • Edamame
  • Gyoza (pork/vegetarian) with soy sauce
  • Chicken tatsuta age with drizzles of mayo
  • Takoyaki aka octpus balls
  • Crispy wrapped prawn with sweet chili

Everything was delicious! Warm and deep fried goodness. With the standouts being the takoyaki, creamy with a chewy dried mini prawn inside, and the prawn wrapped in a pastry sheet and fried.

Dinner is more expensive for the same dish, even for takeaway. The tapas aren't available for takeaway, but the bentos are. The ramens with te exception of the beef are the same price for lunch/dinner though.

Our recommendation? Come for lunch, and use the liven app to get a discount, which only applies to dine in. Alternatively come for the tapas and order bentos for a takeaway dinner.

Have you been to Yuzu? Where do you go for bentos?

Tuesday 3rd May

This week's 'Dinner out West' was selected by jas, African food at Addis Abeba, a white lighted almost Robbin's egg colored restaurant, of where we were the only diners. It's out west and a Tuesday, do people not have dinner out on Tuesdays?

Seriously we were the only people here the whole time, this rarely happens.

So it turns out the menu online isn't up to date...

Coffee Ceremony

We had sambosa to start, lamb with mashed peas and spices in pastry parcels. 4 for $8. Presentation was a bit basic. Though dinning out west is basic most of the time, funny while everyone else is posting food porn we're posting this. :P

I had the vegetarian platter ($14), of which all but one filling (that green one at the front with wilted veggies) was edible. The yellow blob is corn and onion, the two dark oranges had lamb in a spicy sauce, and there were lentils (green blob, split peas). As you can tell we weren't told much about what we ate.

Jas had raw beef with a marinade that was sweet but very hot. He liked it, but after a while freaked out a little that he was eating raw meat, and had failed to order anything to accompany it.

While it was good it was slighter higher in price than African Cuisine and smaller. The setting reminded me of a waiting room at the doctors' office with the calm colours and white lighting. But there was music and incense filled the air.

Would we recommend it? We're a bit meh about it, if you'd like to try it sure, but for African food go to that other place we went to. Why? Larger servings and it's cheaper. Service was minimal though adequate.

Do you have any African restaurants you've been to and recommend?
Dinknesh is next on our list.
